چکیده

Standard Lactation Curves were derived for South African Holstein and Jersey cows, using 20 herd-, 18 ageand six season classes. Six herd classes were below and 13 above the average production level for both breeds. A standard lactation curve was estimated for each combination of herd-, ageand season class, which resulted in 2 160 curves per trait per breed. Variation in Holstein yields was much larger than that of Jerseys, causing different herd classes to be defined for both breeds. South African cows displayed more variation in yields compared to those of Holstein cows in the Netherlands and Ireland. Season of calving had a pronounced effect on the shape of the Standard Lactation Curve, while the combination of calving age and lactation affected both the shape and level of the curves. Expected yields were therefore higher during the whole lactation in higher compared to lower herd classes. The results of this study form the basis for inclusion of records in progress and short lactations in national genetic evaluation.

Comparisons of different models for lactation curves of fat to protein ratio and somatic cell score of Holstein cows in Iran

A total of 989,582 test-day records of 160,243 first-parity cows collected from 131 herds of Iranian Holstein dairy cows from 1995 to 2014 by the Animal Breeding and Improvement Centre of Iran, were used to determine the best model for lactation curves of fat to protein ratio (FPR) and somatic cell scores (SCS) in the first lactation. Several mathematical models including the Wood (WD), Wilmink...

Bovine mastitis prevalence and associated risk factors in dairy cows in Nyagatare District, Rwanda.

In response to farmer requests after milk from their herds was rejected by processors due to poor quality, a study was carried out from April to October 2011 to determine the prevalence of sub clinical mastitis, associated risk factors and causative micro-organisms. Samples were collected from 195 dairy cows on 23 randomly selected dairy farms delivering milk to Isangano, Kirebe and Nyagatare m...

Empirical algebraic modelling of lactation curves using Irish data

The purpose of this study was to find a well-fitting, robust, single-equation model to describe the shape of lactation curves for Irish dairy cows. The suitability of a number of algebraic models that depict lactation curves was examined, using Irish test day data. The analysis was carried out on a total of 14,956 lactation records from commercial and experimental herds and included both autumn...

On the analysis of Canadian Holstein dairy cow lactation curves using standard growth functions.

Six classical growth functions (monomolecular, Schumacher, Gompertz, logistic, Richards, and Morgan) were fitted to individual and average (by parity) cumulative milk production curves of Canadian Holstein dairy cows. The data analyzed consisted of approximately 91,000 daily milk yield records corresponding to 122 first, 99 second, and 92 third parity individual lactation curves. The functions ...

Effect of Milking Frequency on the Lactation Performance and Lactation Curve of Holstein Dairy Cows in Iran

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of milking frequency (three times daily vs. two times daily) on the lactation curve shape, partial and 305-d lactation performance in Holstein dairy cows in Iran. Data from February 2000 to December 2012 comprising 217345 lactations on 141364 cows distributed in 324 herds collected by the Animal Breeding Center of Iran were used. The mean milk...
